Military Gym Review- Naval Station Newport

As with Tierney's recent review of the gym facilities at MCRD San Diego, here is another gym review targeted to the traveling military CrossFitters out there.
This review comes from  a guest blogger, Mal Soller, who kindly sent us a piece about the gym facilities at Naval Station Newport in Newport, Rhode Island.

Take it away Mal...

Base Gym 109
Naval Station Newport, largely a transient education and training base, has significant fitness offerings, and is in the process of updating gyms, pools and other fitness facilities.  The Naval Station is right on par with the majority of other bases whose facilities I’ve utilized.

Base gym (building 109) is the main facility, situated across the street from the combined bachelor quarters, Surface Warfare Officer School, Supply Corps School and Newport Chalet.  It is right down the block from the Naval War College campus as well.

Gym 109 was built in the Quonset hut style and has two main components, which are the basketball courts and the fitness equipment areas.  Like most military gyms, and with CrossFit-style workouts becoming more en vogue, one should not have too many problems executing a WOD at the spacious and well-equipped Gym 109.  Prohibitive to WODs here would be the lack of bumper plates, climbing ropes, miserable winter weather, school schedule, and retired Admirals hogging all of the machines (just kidding on that last one).

The base MWR also offers free yoga, zumba, pilates and aerobics classes to help mix up your fitness routine.  Because of budgetary concerns, the fitness facilities at Newport have limited hours, which could also be prohibitive to early morning, late-evening, and weekend workouts.  The limited schedule has impacted pool patronage patterns.  Do not attempt to swim at lunch, unless you want to give a daily lecture on how to properly share swim lanes with multiple swimmers.  The good news is that there is a state-of-the art gym being built, which will replace multiple buildings with one centralized facility.  The bad news is that it will not be finished until the second quarter of fiscal year -13.

CrossFit Newport is conveniently located just outside of the Naval Station's Gate 1, right behind Bishop’s 4th Street Diner, which is a great place to go for a post-workout snack.
